How to Switch to a Cleaner Deodorant
How to switch to a cleaner deodorant and why it’s important to make the switch.
One of the first things I thought of when I was researching my ingredients in my personal care products was my deodorant. I never made the connection that what I was putting on my skin soaks into my bloodstream.
Breast Cancer is rising, we all need to be more aware..
I’m calling out all of you who DO and don’t wear deodorant. You need to know why it’s better for you
Today I will be talking about how to make the switch and some personal experiences I went through
Why we sweat
Here’s one thing: our bodies need to sweat. It’s part of our natural detoxification process, helping to remove heavy metals, and harmful BPA’s from the body. It’s also a way for the body to regulate temperature.
Deodorants VS. Antiperspirants
Deodorants (like the Clean Deo) work to neutralize odors, whereas antiperspirants control and prevent sweat - using ingredients like aluminum, which can plug sweat ducts and prevent the body natural detox process.
Why is it safer?
The Clean Deo is formulated without aluminum, which can potentially clog pores and hinder the body’s natural detoxification process. Plus, we don’t use synthetic fragrances, which can be known to have serious health effects. We have a 100% ingredient transparency policy.
How to check to see if your deodorant is safe to use
The EWG App is a great tool to use when you are shopping for food, cosmetics and cleaning supplies!
I use this website to use when you are researching your products. I use this ALL THE TIME!!!
and check all your ingredients.
Remember 0-3 rating is SAFE and 4-10 is NOT. If your product does NOT show up on the website, please go to our Never List and I'll put the link in comments.
RULE OF THUMB:
Does your product have a VERY long list of ingredients or words you can not pronounce, yes that is a red flag of a toxic ingredient you shouldn't be using on your skin.
Here is more information about Beautycoutnter and our Clean Promise to you as well!
Never assume, always check…!
EWG’s Skin Deep® database gives you practical solutions to protect yourself and your family from everyday exposures to chemicals in personal care products.
Now that we've nailed down what deo you're currently using and some preliminary "ratings" given by the Environment Working Group, let's dive deeper into ingredients in conventional deodorants/antiperspirants.
See the graphic above for 𝕗𝕚𝕧𝕖 of the most common and most toxic ingredients found in our mainstream choices for deodorant. One ingredient not listed there: 𝕗𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖.
Unfortunately, if you see the term "𝕗𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖” on your ingredient labels (deodorant or not), that heading can be filled with another load of toxic ingredients including more parabens, phthalates, and other things we should be trying to avoid. Sneaky, right?
The Clean Deo is formulated without aluminum, which can potentially clog pores and hinder the body's natural detoxification process. Plus, we don't use synthetic 𝕗𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖𝕤, which can be known to have serious health effects—Shout out to Beautycounter's 100% ingredient transparency policy, especially when it comes to 𝕗𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖𝕤.
Questions to ask yourself
1. Does your current deo have any of these 5 ingredients (or 6 if you include 𝕗𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖)?
2. If your ingredient label looks good, were you aware of these ingredients, or what made you make the switch?
How to make the switch easy
It seems the solution would be simple, right? Switch to a non toxic deodorant and be on with your life. But it wasn’t so simple at all. For the last 5 years I’ve tried MANY different deodorants with mixed success. It’s been a frustrating process to say the last. As someone with sensitive armpits I had quite a few negative experiences – some deodorants even led to huge welts under my armpits! Others just simply didn’t work. Frustrating, right?
Armpit Detox
If you’re looking to make the swap to safer deodorant, consider a regular armpit detox with charcoal-based products. I like to use Beautycounter’s Charcoal Face Mask on my armpits once per week. I follow it up with the Charcoal Cleansing Bar. And shaving regularly helps, too!
Find one that works for you
It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation with natural deodorant. Each body has unique chemistry, so what works for one person might not work for another. I’ve been using Beautycounter’s The Clean Deo in Coconut for close to 4 months now and I absolutely love it.
