From the Farm to Town People

All I knew was farm life - now we will be town people?

My whole life I lived on a farm. Growing up I have one older brother Nolan and one sister Loretta, yes I was the baby of the family. I was told this a lot, but truly believed I was never spoiled in any matter.

From “Tomgirl” to Makeup and Beauty Enthusiast!

You may be shocked but I was a total “tomgirl” meaning if I had any chance to go outside and do chores, I was all in. After school we had a choice, go outside and clean out the pig yards or stay in the house and do laundry, dishes, and make dinner. Yep, I was all over going for the outside work. I had some BIG dreams as I grew up and what I wanted my next 20 years to look like.

Fast forward 30 years later, I can honestly say I lived on a farm almost my whole life. 2 years in college I lived in a very small apartment with 3 other girls, and my parents moved to town the same year I moved to college. I commuted back and forth until I married my husband Lance. He bought a farm about 1 year before we were married. I finished my last year of college and we were married in the year 2000.

When I closed my eyes I could see us moving into our first single-family home.

I could visualize the kids running in the backyard and playing on our very own swing set.

I visualized my husband working on the farm, and I would be helping him any way I could.

I visualized being able to pay off my new graphics degree and living the simple life on the farm.

My vision for a different life was so crystal clear and we both knew we wanted to raise our kids on the farm.

Making the Move

Fast forward to TODAY - yes we lived our dreams, we love the farm life, but it came with a lot of ups and downs and to be honest hard work for EVERYONE in the family. Our girls, now 17 and 15, helped Lance with early 3 am loading out hogs on the truck for market and didn’t complain much. They know what hard work is and dug in and helped. Yes, this used to be my job before the kids were old enough to help. I will say I complained a lot, it was NOT my passion at all.

We have a  beautiful house and an amazing view of the sunset in our backyard. We decided it was best for our family to sell the place where we lived for the last 10 years and let someone else make new memories. The farm brings so much joy, peace, incredible sunrises and sunsets, and a HUGE backyard to play any kind of game or sport. Our farm was a place we could invite all our friends and kids over for burgers and sneak in a fire right after it was dark.

One more time will I be moving my wedding dress. One more time I will need to find the perfect spot for it to be stored. Each time my daughter Megan sees my box with my wedding dress, she begs me to try it on. I finally gave in and realized it fit her perfectly. This brings back so many memories of our wedding day. Yes, we had a HUGE barn dance, and still, our friends talk about how many people were there in our barn celebrating with us.

As we anticipate the selling of our farm, we will move to town until we make some final decisions for our family...stay tuned I can’t wait to talk more about the pros and cons of living on the farm vs town.
